Minor league baseball teams have a habit of doing things like this.  They’ll take a scandal or news story that occurs during the off season and create a themed night around it.  Listen, just because it is in the headlines in January…that doesn’t make it a viable promotion during the baseball season.

Minor League Team to Hold #DeflateCancer Night

Looking your way, Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, are pleased to announce #DeflateCancer Night, one of the six nights in the team’s Strike Out Cancer Series, on Wednesday, April 15 against the Salem Red Sox. In light of the NFL and New England Patriots “Deflate-gate” scandal, #DeflateCancer Night will focus on raising awareness for testicular cancer and feature an inflatable baseball giveaway to the first 1200 fans through the gates. Eleven of every 12 fans will receive a deflated ball, while one in every 12 will receive a “properly” inflated ball.
“In honor of the New England sports tradition, the choice of a night in which the Boston Red Sox affiliate was in town was the obvious choice for this night,” Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich said. “To be able to promote awareness of such a serious disease so early in the season, while having some fun in the process is what we are all about.”
Look, I get it (I really do!)…someone came into work following the AFC Championship Game with a brilliant idea of how to use a double entendre to their advantage and cash in on a hot sports story. Unfortunately, what seems like an awesome idea on January 21 does not necessarily mean it will be relevant on April 15.  Wouldn’t a better promotion on Tax Day be prostate exams?
I mean, my Dad used to tell me how he’s been “taking it in the rear from the government” for years!
