Right-handed reliever Joel Hanrahan will undergo a second Tommy John surgery, ending his tenure with the Detroit Tigers, who released him today.
Hanrahan had surgery in 2013 but never lost the pain in his pitching elbow.
The Tigers announced Monday that Hanrahan, 33, would see a specialist in Dallas on Tuesday.
"Obviously, it's been a long time and it's not working out the right way, so just try to get some answers," Hanrahan said before the visits.

The veteran hasn't thrown since Feb. 22, after his bullpen session was cut short because of soreness in his arm. He signed a minor league deal with the Tigers this off-season, his second $1-million contract in as many years. Last May, he signed but was unable to progress in his recovery enough to pitch in the big leagues.
He has a 3.85 lifetime ERA in seven seasons with the Washington Nationals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox. He was a two-time All-Star in Pittsburgh, saving at least 36 games in 2011-12.
