SAN FRANCISCO -- Intending to add experience and depth at the catcher's spot, the Giants were expected to announce on Tuesday that free agent Nick Hundley has agreed to terms on a one-year, $2 million contract.
Hundley, 33, has compiled a .250/.303/.404 slash line for three teams in nine Major League seasons. He has played all but 50 of his 746 games for the Padres and Rockies, two of the Giants' National League West rivals.

Hundley also has performed proficiently at AT&T Park, where he owns a .278 batting average in 31 games. The right-handed-hitting Hundley has defied typical percentages by hitting better against right-handers (.256 batting average, .419 slugging percentage) than lefties (.233, .363).
Trevor Brown, the Giants' incumbent backup catcher, will receive an opportunity to retain his Major League role, but he likely will open the season with Triple-A Sacramento. The Giants' decision-makers believe that Brown, who hit .237 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 75 games as a rookie last season, can benefit from more Minor League seasoning.
Hundley's arrival should ease any vulnerability the Giants might have felt about having two catchers on their 40-man roster -- Buster Posey and Brown.
