CHICAGO -- Cubs manager Joe Maddon has preached the need to be patient with some of the young players on the roster, but apparently the team decided it was time to make a move regarding struggling slugger Kyle Schwarber.
Schwarber, who last year returned to action during the postseason to help the Cubs win the World Series after recovering from a knee injury he suffered in early April, was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. He was batting .171 in 64 games.

A source confirmed the move, plus outfielder Jason Heyward will be placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, because of an abrasion on his left hand. He scraped his hand on the warning track at PNC Park on Sunday while trying to catch a foul ball.
Outfielder Mark Zagunis, who was batting .249 at Triple-A Iowa, was to be called up, along with right-hander Dylan Floro, which will give the Cubs eight relievers heading into a four-game series against the Marlins.
Schwarber batted .412 in five World Series games last year after not getting a hit in four at-bats before he tore two ligaments in his left knee in the third game of the regular season.
This month, Schwarber was 9-for-46 (.196) with four home runs, three doubles, nine RBIs and 15 strikeouts.
