Former Yankees outfielder Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison Wednesday for his involvement in a government corruption scandal in his native Dominican Republic.
Mondesi, a one-time All-Star who played for the Yankees from 2002 to 2003, also was fined 60 million pesos ($1.25 million) after he was found guilty, according to DR news outlet Deportivo Z 101.
The 13-year MLB veteran was elected in 2010 as mayor of San Cristobal, his hometown, and served a six-year term until 2016. Mondesi originally ran on the ticket of the centrist Dominican Liberation Party, which currently holds power in the country, before changing his loyalty to the rightist Dominican Revolutionary Party a year later.
