The Giants acquired third baseman Evan Longoria and cash from the Rays on Wednesday for their No. 1-ranked prospect, shortstop Christian Arroyo, outfielder Denard Span and pitchers Matt Krook (No. 25) and Stephen Woods (No. 29)."This move fills an important need for our club and completes one of our offseason goals," executive vice president of baseball operations Brian Sabean said. "Evan has been one of the best third baseman in the game over the last decade, and we are thrilled to add him to the organization. Moving forward, we will continue to work on additional opportunities to improve the club for 2018."
The longtime Rays third baseman and three-time All-Star was on the cusp of attaining his 10-and-5 rights in April, which would have allowed him to veto any trade.
Longoria hit .261/.313/.424 with 20 homers and 86 RBIs last season, and he will fill a significant void for San Francisco at the position. He won his third Gold Glove Award in 2017.
