Shortstop Alcides Escobar will return to the Kansas City Royals in 2018, multiple news outlets reported Friday.The player and the team have agreed on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, according to reports. The team has not confirmed the signing.Like teammates Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain, Escobar became a free agent at the end of last season. Escobar batted .250 with six homers and 54 RBIs in 2017, his seventh season with the Royals. He played for the Brewers for parts of three seasons before that.
Escobar came to the Royals from Milwaukee in a December 2010 trade for pitcher Zack Greinke that also brought Cain to Kansas City. He has been a regular at shortstop since, including three seasons (2014, 2016, 2017) in which he played all 162 games.Known more for his glove than his bat, Escobar has won one Gold Glove, in 2015.
