The Mets requested that Matt Harvey agree to a Minor League assignment. He refused to accept, and will be designated for assignment.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
General manager Sandy Alderson appeared somewhat emotional in discussing the end of Harvey's Mets career. He called it "the end of an era."
"He was appreciated for what he brought to the New York Mets," Alderson added. "My guess is that there are people out there who are willing to take a shot on Matt Harvey."
"It's been tough," Harvey said after allowing five runs over two innings of relief in Thursday's 11-0 loss to the Braves. "It's been hard going out there and not being able to help, and do what I know I can do. I've just got to keep working."
