The Giants announced that right-hander Johnny Cueto will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery Thursday in Los Angeles.
Cueto will likely be sidelined through much of the 2019 season, too, due to the timing of the surgery. He is under contract through 2021 after signing a six-year, $130 million contract with the Giants prior to the '16 campaign.
Cueto, 32, got off to a stellar start this season before landing on the disabled list on May 1 with inflammation in his right pitching elbow.

He returned to Major League action on July 5, but was forced back onto the DL on Sunday with more pain in his elbow.
San Francisco has had to persevere through extensive injuries to each of its top three starters in Cueto, Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija. The Giants entered Wednesday five games back in the National League West and 4 1/2 games back of the second NL Wild Card spot with a 55-54 record.
