Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado has been suspended five games and fined $2,500 for his role in Sunday's brawl with the Pirates, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. No other discipline has been announced.
Maldonado, 27, appeared to land the best punch in the skirmish, a punch that left Travis Snider with a black eye but no other injuries.
The brawl started when Gerrit Cole took exception to Carlos Gomez's bat flip on a triple and the two started chirping at each other at third base. It seems likely those two will be suspended as well.In four games this year, Maldonado has gone 4 for 12 (.333) with three walks and two strikeouts. The Brewers are not allowed to replace him on the roster during the suspension, so they'll either have to play with one catcher (Jonathan Lucroy) or shuffle the roster to add a backup.
