PHOENIX -- The D-backs defeated the Padres, 5-1, in the series opener at Chase Field on Friday thanks to Josh Collmenter's 8 1/3-inning gem.
Collmenter (9-7) dominated from the start, keeping the Padres off the bases until the third inning.
The Padres got two hits in the third inning, but one cancelled out the other. Alexi Amarista singled and tried to reach third on a hit by Yangervis Solarte, but right fielder David Peralta threw him out to end the inning.
The Padres didn't pick up another hit until the ninth and scored their sole run on a passed ball.

Collmenter leads D-backs past Padres 5-1

The 28-year-old Collmenter worked efficiently. He didn't walk a single batter and struck out eight.
The outing was his best since his complete-game win against the Reds on May 29, when he faced the minimum 27 batters despite allowing three hits.
It didn't hurt that the D-backs spotted him four runs early.
The D-backs staged a two-out rally in the first inning. Peralta led off with a triple -- his seventh of the season -- and Mark Trumbo followed with an infield hit to give the D-backs the lead.
But the big blow came on the next pitch, when Miguel Montero roped a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole, putting Padres starter Odrisamer Despaigne (3-5) in an early three-run hole.
The D-backs struck again in the next inning, putting an unearned run on the board courtesy of Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko.
Jake Lamb singled to lead off the inning and moved around the bases on a pair of groundouts. Ender Inciarte hit a grounder to Gyorko for what looked as if it would be an inning-ending out, but Gyorko booted the ball, allowing Lamb to score.
Collmenter didn't need any more help, cruising to his ninth victory of the season.
