SAN FRANCISCO -- Tuesday night couldn't have gone much better for the Giants.
The Giants took care of business, 5-1, against the D-backs inside AT&T Park. For an added bonus, all of the teams they're jockeying with for National League Wild Card positioning lost Tuesday night.
The Giants' win, coupled by losses by the Braves, Brewers and Pirates, extended the Giants' advantage for the National League's first Wild Card spot to four games.
The outcome along the shores of McCovey Cove on Tuesday night was never much in doubt.

Petit keeps Giants rolling in 5-1 win over D-backs

Yusmeiro Petit bounced back from a rough outing in Colorado with a dominant one; he was perfect through three innings and was tagged for one run on four hits while striking out nine in his second career complete game. He did all this on just 84 pitches. And he didn't have to wait long for sufficient run support to arrive.
A two-out walk by Pablo Sandoval in the bottom of the first loaded the bases for Andrew Susac, who also drew a free pass to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.
They loaded the bases again in the second, this time with one out. Buster Posey grounded into what should've been an inning-ending double play on a 3-0 count, but a casual throw from shortstop Didi Gregorius allowed Petit to score. Two more walks by Hunter Pence and Sandoval extended the lead to 3-0.
Left fielder Ender Inciarte couldn't corral a Joe Panik single in the sixth, which allowed Gregor Blanco to score from second base. A Posey sacrifice fly scored Angel Pagan to push the lead to 5-1.
The single was the fourth of five recorded by Panik on the night, bumping his average to .327. It was the first five-hit game of the rookie's young career.
Arizona starter Wade Miley was removed from the game after just two innings. He allowed three earned runs on five hits and four walks.
Inciarte led off the fourth inning by blasting a home run into McCovey Cove. It was Arizona's first hit of the game and the 101st home run to land in the water in the park's history.
The win improved the Giants to 9-5 against Arizona this season.
