Less than a week after signing Billy Butler, the Athletics added another first baseman to the stable in a trade with the Pirates on Sunday:
In 143 games with the Pirates and Mets in 2014, Davis hit .233/.344/.378 (105 OPS+) with 19 doubles and 11 home runs. That includes a .247/.360/.405 (120 OPS+) batting line against right-handed pitchers. Davis had 32 homers and a 111 OPS+ with New York in 2012, his best season.The Athletics are known to favor fly ball hitters, and Davis fits the mold. He had a 39.5 percent ground ball rate last season, the 55th lowest out of the 209 hitters to bat at least 400 times. A's manager Bob Melvin has proven to be excellent at platooning players and Davis is a prime candidate for such a role.Davis joins Butler, Brandon Moss, Stephen Vogt, Nate Frieman and Kyle Blanks as first basemen on Oakland's 40-man roster.
