Less than a week after signing Billy Butler, the Athletics added another first baseman to the stable in a trade with the Pirates on Sunday:
The Pirates have since announced the trade. There is international slot money going both ways.
Davis, 27, was designated for assignment last week. MLB Trade Rumors projects him to earn $4.4 million through arbitration in 2015, and the fact that Pittsburgh designated him for assignment confirms that the Pirates were planning to non-tender him at the Dec. 2 deadline.

Athletics acquire Ike Davis from Pirates

In 143 games with the Pirates and Mets in 2014, Davis hit .233/.344/.378 (105 OPS+) with 19 doubles and 11 home runs. That includes a .247/.360/.405 (120 OPS+) batting line against right-handed pitchers. Davis had 32 homers and a 111 OPS+ with New York in 2012, his best season.
The Athletics are known to favor fly ball hitters, and Davis fits the mold. He had a 39.5 percent ground ball rate last season, the 55th lowest out of the 209 hitters to bat at least 400 times. A's manager Bob Melvin has proven to be excellent at platooning players and Davis is a prime candidate for such a role.
Davis joins Butler, Brandon Moss, Stephen Vogt, Nate Frieman and Kyle Blanks as first basemen on Oakland's 40-man roster. Moss and Vogt can play the outfield as well.
