SAN DIEGO -- The Padres continue to be active this offseason, particularly when it comes to outfielders and catchers -- and offensive upgrades.On Thursday, on the heels of agreeing to a deal that landed outfielder Wil Myers from the Rays and while closing in on finalizing their trade to get Matt Kemp from the Dodgers, the Padres acquired catcher Derek Norris in a trade with the A's that also netted San Diego right-handed pitcher Seth Streich and an international-signing slot.
The Padres will send two highly touted right-handed pitchers, Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez, to Oakland in return, a baseball source told MLB.com. The New York Daily News was the first to report the deal.The trade has yet to be confirmed by either team. 
The Padres have already parted with two catchers this winter -- Yasmani Grandal, who is headed to the Dodgers in the Kemp deal, and Rene Rivera, who was part of Wednesday's 11-player, three-team deal with the Nationals and Rays, Rivera's new club.Norris, 25, hit .270/.361/.403 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs in 385 at-bats last season. He won't be eligible for salary arbitration until 2016 and won't be eligible for free agency until '19.Norris, like Myers, fits the profile of what first-year general manager A.J. Preller has been after this offseason -- cost-controlled bats to bolster what was the least productive offense in baseball last season.The Padres acquired catcher Ryan Hanigan from the Rays in the Myers deal and have another catcher coming in the Kemp trade in Tim Federowicz. Norris, however, will handle the bulk of the catching duties, giving the Padres some much-needed pop.He hit eight of his 10 home runs before the All-Star break and posted a .245/.314/.324 line in the second half.Streich, 23, was the A's No. 10 prospect, according to MLB.com. He was 9-6 with a 3.16 ERA in 22 starts in the hitter-friendly California League with 116 strikeouts in 114 innings.New Padres director of player development Sam Geaney, who came from the A's, no doubt had some input in the trade.Hahn, 25, had a nice debut with the Padres in 2014, going 7-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 games (12 starts). He would have contended for a spot in the starting rotation.Alvarez, 23, was traded to the Padres in July from the Angels in the Huston Street deal. He had a 1.13 ERA in eight innings in September after the rosters expanded and likely would have had a spot in the bullpen next season.Streich's scouting reportA two-way player at Ohio, Streich moved to the mound full-time when the A's drafted him in the sixth round in 2012. After an injury-shortened 2013, he returned healthy this season and broke out at Class A Advanced Stockton. The 23-year-old posted a 3.16 ERA and struck out 116 batters and walked 22 in 114 innings in the hitter friendly California League. Streich's velocity ticked up in 2014 and his fastball was clocked up to 95 mph. He made strides with his curveball and changeup, giving him three viable offerings. If he can build on his recent success and refine his command, he could develop into a solid big league starter.
