Last week, Randy Johnson was one of four players elected to the Hall of Fame, joining Craig Biggio, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz. The Big Unit understandably received the highest voting percentage of the four at 97.3 percent, the eighth highest voting percentage in history.
After the Hall of Fame announcement was made, Diamondbacks team president Derrick Hall told reporters (including Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona) that the team is planning to retire Johnson's uniform No. 51 at some point during the 2015 season.

Johnson played eight years in Arizona split between two stints (1999-2004, 2007-08). The team originally signed him as a free agent during the 1998-99 offseason, giving him a four-year contract that resulted in four Cy Youngs. Johnson went 81-27 with a 2.48 ERA (187 ERA+) during those four seasons while averaging 258 innings and 354 strikeouts per season.
All told, Johnson went 118-62 with a 2.83 ERA (164 ERA+) during his eight years with the D-Backs. He is the franchise's all-time leader in wins, ERA, innings (1,630 1/3), strikeouts (2,077) and WAR (53.0). Retiring his number is both well-deserved and entirely expected.
No. 51 will join Nos. 20 and 42 as Arizona's retired numbers. No. 42 is universally retired for Jackie Robinson and No. 20 was retired for outfielder Luis Gonzalez in 2010.
