Twenty-two-year-old Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was born a few years too late to witness the greatness of Jerry Tarkanian's UNLV Runnin' Rebels, but the Las Vegas native apparently appreciates them no less.
Legendary basketball coach Jerry "Tark the Shark" Tarkanian passed away at the age of 84 on Wednesday, prompting an outpouring of memories of the coach who elevated the UNLV program to an eye-catching juggernaut in the late '80s, culminating with an NCAA title in a 30-point beatdown of Duke in the 1990 National Championship game.

Harper's varsity-style jacket lists the starting members of that team (Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, David Butler, Greg Anthony and Anderson Hunt) along with the late towel-chomping coach.
In the photo, Harper is standing near the bronze Tarkanian statue outside UNLV's arena (Thomas & Mack Center), which was dedicated in Oct. 2013.
