Last week, ex-Giants third baseman and current Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval created a bit of a stir when he said he doesn't miss most of his former teammates. Here's the exact quote:
"Only Bochy," Sandoval said of Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "I love Boch. He's like my dad. He's the only guy that I miss. And Hunter Pence. Just those guys.
If Sandoval had stopped at "only Bochy" and said it with a laugh, it would have been no big deal. But he kept going and got oddly specific by singling out Pence as the only player he'll miss. I'm sure some of his old teammates were caught off guard by that.
Earlier this week, former Giants first baseman -- and Sandoval's ex-teammate -- Aubrey Huff called out Sandoval for his comments on Facebook. Check it out (h/t McCovey Chronicles):
This isn't the first time Huff has called out Sandoval either. Here's what he tweeted last month when that unflattering photo of Sandoval made the rounds:
Safe to say Huff is not a big fan of Sandoval. The two were teammates with San Francisco from 2010-12 and won a pair of World Series championships together, though Huff didn't play much of a role in the team's 2012 title, similar to how Sandoval didn't play much of a role in the 2010 postseason.
Anyway, Huff's comments were brought to Sandoval's attention on Friday and he fired back at his former teammate. Here's what he told Marly Rivera and Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston:
"Who is Aubrey Huff?" Sandoval asked in response to a post made by the former first baseman on Facebook. "What is important here is to see where the person who made those comments is, and where I am now, that's what counts." ... "Those were completely incoherent comments," Sandoval said of Huff's post. "I'm not selfish. I am where I am because I have worked very hard and have always done my job. Anyone can say whatever they want. I will not lose sleep or stop working my hardest because of that." ... "I said what I had to say, and I'm not going to take it back," he said. "I stand by it. I was clear, and you know what they say, the truth hurts." ... "But it's nothing personal," he said. "It's time to move on and turn the page, and now I am focused on my new home with my new teammates, and have left the rest behind. I am focused on my own teammates now and spending as much time together as possible."
To call Sandoval a fan favorite in San Francisco would be an understatement. He was a borderline icon and Giants fans will love him forever for what he helped the team accomplish these last few years.
It's disappointing to see him take this scorched earth approach after leaving the team though. He's burning bridges -- not necessarily with Giants fans but with former teammates. That's a shame.
