Eight days after reinstating him from the paternity list and designating him for assignment, the Miami Marlins released Opening Day catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on Tuesday afternoon.Saltalamacchia, who signed a three-year, $21 million contract two winters ago as a free agent, hit .209 with 21 doubles, 12 homers and 45 RBI in 123 games with the Marlins. 
The 30-year-old backstop got off to a rough start in 2015, going 2 for 29 (.069) with a double, a homer, an RBI and 12 strikeouts in nine games.Since Saltalamacchia wasn't traded and cleared waivers, he is free to sign with another team.Prospect J.T. Realmuto has since taken over starting duties, batting .232 with six runs, three doubles, a triple and six RBI in 17 games.
