Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has a broken bone in his left hand, as first reported by FOX Sports 1 MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal on Saturday. Stanton will miss four to six weeks, according to multiple reports.
Stanton, who leads the majors in homers with 27 and RBI with 67, said the injury bothered him most on swing and misses. He went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts Friday.
"Just on a swing my bat dug into my hand a little bit," Stanton said after the Marlins' 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. "Didn't feel the greatest, so just get it checked out and know for sure what's going on.
I think it just kind of got worse and worse (during the game). One of my at-bats prior, but this one was the icing on the cake."
Stanton, who signed a record 13-year, $325 million contract in the offseason, missed the final 17 games last season after being hit in the face by a pitch from Brewers right-hander Mike Fiers. Despite missing that time, he still finished second to Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw for the National League MVP.
Stanton has played in all but one game this season for the Marlins. He has been hot in June, batting .344 with 12 homers and 23 RBI in 24 games. But this injury could derail Stanton's special season.
"It's on my hand where I grip the bat, where it rotates in my hand," Stanton said Friday. "That's where it was."
Stanton, who is scheduled to have an MRI on Saturday, was keeping the injury in perspective after the game.
"My level of concern will be when I know exactly what's up," Stanton said.
