ATLANTA -- The Braves were nearing completion of a deal that will send Jonny Gomes and cash considerations to the Royals, a Major League source confirmed Monday night. In exchange, Atlanta will get Luis Valenzuela, a 21-year-old Minor League shortstop.

Royals acquire Jonny Gomes from Braves

Gomes is hitting .221 with seven doubles, seven homers and 22 RBIs through 83 games this season. The Royals would be Gomes' sixth Major League club. The 34-year-old veteran signed with the Braves as a free agent this past winter.
Gomes would add depth to Kansas City's bench.
