Wednesday night the Cubs were eliminated from the postseason by the Mets, who swept the NLCS in four games. With his team's season over, Cubs right-hander Dan Haren announced Thursday morning he is retiring from baseball.
Here's the message Haren posted on Twitter:
Haren, 35, had reportedly considered retirement for a few years now. He nearly called it a career last offseason after being traded to the Marlins because he wanted to stay near his family on the West Coast. Haren instead played one more season.
In 32 starts and 187 1/3 innings with the Marlins and Cubs this year, Haren went 11-9 with a 3.60 ERA (108 ERA+) and a 132/38 K/BB. It was his best season since 2011. He was not on Chicago's postseason roster.
Haren went 153-131 with a 3.75 ERA (110 ERA+) in parts of 13 seasons with the Cardinals, Athletics, Diamondbacks, Angels, Nationals, Dodgers, Marlins and Cubs.
