The Royals have declined to tender a contract to right-hander Greg Holland, the team announced, making the two-time All-Star a free agent. Wednesday is the deadline to teams to tender contracts to their pre-arbitration and arbitration-eligible players.Holland, 30, underwent Tommy John surgery in September and the non-tender was expected.

MLB Trade Rumors projected Holland to earn $11.3 million through arbitration in 2016, which is simply way too much for a pitcher who is set to miss the entire season due to injury.
The Royals can still re-sign Holland to a smaller contract, and my guess is they will attempt to do just that. A one-year contract with a club option for 2017 might make the most sense. Holland gets to rehab and the team gets to bring him back the next year if they like what they see.
Holland had a 3.83 ERA (109 ERA+) with 32 saves in 37 chances in 2015, making it his worst full season as a big leaguer. He pitched to a 1.86 ERA (220 ERA+) from 2011-14 while being simply one of the most dominant relievers in baseball.
