The Brewers on Wednesday signed free agent first baseman Chris Carter to a one-year contract.
Carter, 29, batted .199/.307/.427 (100 OPS+) with 24 home runs and 151 strikeouts in 129 games for the Astros this past season. Across parts of six big-league seasons, Carter owns an OPS+ of 110 with 109 homers. Earlier this offseason, Houston non-tendered Carter.

“We are pleased to be able to add Chris to our organization,” said GM David Stearns in a statement released by the team. “Over the past three seasons, Chris has proven to be one of the most consistent power threats in the game. We believe that his skills and experiences will complement our team well and provide additional production to our lineup.”
Until last season, when Adam Lind manned the position, first base had been a weakness for the Brewers largely since Prince Fielder departed via free agency following the 2011 campaign. Lind was traded to the Mariners earlier this winter.
