Richards went 15-12 with a 3.65 ERA in 2015, making 32 starts. Los Angeles Angels starter Garrett Richards has a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will need Tommy John surgery, an official told USA TODAY Sports. The official requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

The 27-year-old was scratched from his Friday start against the Rays after throwing only 79 pitches Sunday, due to what the team said was dehydration and cramping.
Garrett Richards likely needs Tommy John surgery, Angels rotation in flux
"I'm just trying to take it day by day," Richards said Wednesday. "Stay on top of it, stay hydrated, try to bounce back. Everything just kind of doesn't feel crisp right now."
The Angels’ rotation is already without C.J. Wilson, currently on the 60-day DL with a shoulder injury, and Andrew Heaney, who only made one start before going down with an arm injury. Heaney has UCL damage and is going through consecutive rehab to avoid Tommy John surgery. It's the second major injury of Richards' career, the first being a season-ending knee injury that required surgery in August of 2014. Jayne Kamin-Oncea, USA TODAY Sports Bob Nightengale/USA Today
