KANSAS CITY -- The Royals have agreed to a two-year deal with left-handed-hitting infielder/outfielder Brandon Moss, a source confirmed to MLB.com.
Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported the deal, pending a physical this week, would be for two years at $12 million. Jim Bowden of ESPN first reported the deal was close.

Brandon Moss agrees to a two-year, $12M deal with Royals

Club officials have not confirmed the agreement, and likely won't, per policy, until after the physical. But a source said a press conference is likely mid-week. The Royals would be Moss' seventh team in the Major Leagues. Moss, 33, played last season with the Cardinals and hit 28 home runs in 464 plate appearances. He finished with a .225 average and just a .300 on-base percentage. Moss especially struggled after the All-Star break, posting a .191/.248/.392 slash line. Moss would presumably fill the Royals' vacant DH spot, after the club lost Kendrys Morales to Toronto earlier this offseason. Moss could also serve as a backup to Eric Hosmer at first base. Signing Moss would apparently jettison the Royals' offseason plan of having a "floating" DH -- using several different position players at the spot during the course of a week. The signing also seemingly reduces Cheslor Cuthbert's role -- he would likely have been the primary DH under the floating plan. Cuthbert, who is out of options, still may possibly be involved in a platoon at DH with Moss, who had a .664 OPS against left-handers last season.
