CHICAGO -- The White Sox completed a trade with the Yankees on Tuesday to send third baseman Todd Frazier, closer David Robertson and hard-throwing reliever Tommy Kahnle for outfield prospects Blake Rutherford and Tito Polo, pitching prospect Ian Clarkin and right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard.
"Adding two arms like that could really help out. Those are two power arms that have strikeout stuff," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Robertson and Kahnle.
Frazier, a New Jersey native and resident, is set to become a free agent after the season, and he has been the focus of trade rumors since this past weekend. Robertson, who is owed the remainder of $12 million in 2017 and $13 million in '18, is returning to New York, where he pitched from 2008-14 before signing with the White Sox after the '14 season.
Kahnle is having a breakout 2017 campaign, posting a 2.50 ERA over 37 games, along with 60 strikeouts and seven walks over 36 innings. Kahnle was selected by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB Draft.
The White Sox are also calling up Yoan Moncada, who is MLBPipeline.com's No. 1 prospect, from Triple-A Charlotte, as well as right-hander Brad Goldberg. Moncada will wear No. 10.
The move comes less than a week after the White Sox traded starter Jose Quintana across town to the Cubs in exchange for four prospects, headlined by outfielder Eloy Jimenez (No. 8 prospect overall, according to MLBPipeline.com) and right-hander Dylan Cease (No. 63).
"We made the determination that bundling these three players together was the best way to maximize our return on any transaction," said Rick Hahn, the White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "We felt this trade with the Yankees brought back the most quality as opposed to spreading our assets across multiple deals."Rutherford, the Yankees' top pick in the 2016 MLB Draft at No. 18 overall and No. 3 in the team's farm system, is the No. 30 prospect in the Majors, per MLBPipeline.com. Clarkin, who is the Yankees' No. 19-ranked prospect, was a former first-round pick in 2013, and he's 4-5 with a 2.62 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts) at Class A Advanced Tampa. Clippard has a 4.95 ERA over 40 games, and he's owed the remainder of $4.25 million for this season.
The moves continue the ongoing rebuild engineered by Hahn, which featured nine of the Top 100 Prospects per MLBPipeline.com as part of the White Sox organization.
