Corey Seager needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the 2018 season, the Dodgers announced on Monday.
Seager has a right UCL sprain and will undergo the surgery, a huge blow for the Dodgers, as it leaves Los Angeles without one of its biggest stars for the rest of the year. The Dodgers placed Seager on the 10-day disabled list prior to Monday's series opener against the D-backs in Arizona -- a big National League West series as the 12-15 Dodgers try to make up ground against the division-leading D-backs (19-8).
To fill Seager's spot on the roster, the D-backs recalled infielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.
Seager was an All-Star both of the past two seasons for the Dodgers and the NL Rookie of the Year in 2016, when he also finished third in the NL MVP vote. The 24-year-old was hitting .267/.348/.396 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 26 games this season.
