The Yankees added another veteran pitcher to their starting rotation on Monday, acquiring right-hander Lance Lynn from the Twins in exchange for first baseman Tyler Austin and Minor League right-hander Luis Rijo. The Yankees will pay roughly half of the $4.5 million still owed to Lynn this season, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Lynn signed with the Twins on a one-year, $12 million deal at the end of this past offseason, but the veteran righty has struggled to a 5.10 ERA over 20 starts to this point. The Yankees acquired left-handed starter J.A. Happ from the Blue Jays last week in an effort to address their rotation, long seen as their biggest hole leading up to Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline.
Austin has been stationed with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since June 15, and he came off the disabled list on July 7. The third-year first baseman slashed .223/.280/.471 with 14 extra-base hits over 132 plate appearances with the Yankees earlier this year. He has been blocked at first base in the Bronx by Greg Bird.
Rijo began the year with Rookie-level Pulaski and subsequently rose to Class A Advanced Tampa, then Class A Short Season Staten Island. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA in seven outings (five starts) across all levels.
Earlier on Monday, New York acquired $1.25 million in international signing bonus pool money from the Mariners for right-hander Adam Warren.
