OAKLAND -- The A's have acquired right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for two players to be named or cash considerations, the club announced on Monday. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A's designated left-handed pitcher Jeremy Bleich for assignment.
Fiers was 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA and .258 opponents batting average in 21 starts with Detroit. He has walked just 26 batters in 119.0 innings and his average of 1.97 walks per nine innings is eighth lowest in the American League. The 33-year-old right-hander has held the opposition to a .165 batting average with runners in scoring position, which is tied for third lowest in the AL. Fiers is 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA over his last 12 starts after going 4-3 with a 4.78 ERA over his first nine starts.

A's acquire Mike Fiers from Tigers for players to be named later

Fiers was originally selected by the Brewers in the 22nd round of the 2009 Draft and has pitched for Milwaukee (2011-15), Houston (2015-17) and Detroit (2018) in eight seasons in the Majors. He was dealt to the Astros at the Trade Deadline in 2015 and went 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 10 games with Houston down the stretch, including a no-hitter on Aug. 21, 2015. Fiers signed with the Tigers as a free agent following the 2017 season and is 49-53 with a 4.06 ERA in 162 games, 144 starts, in his career.
Bleich made his Major League debut with the A's this year and allowed two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning in two relief appearances during his stint with Oakland from July 13 to 21. He is 1-1 with a save and a 2.91 ERA in 31 relief appearances with Triple-A Nashville.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
