PHILADELPHIA -- The Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Phillies outfielder Odúbel Herrera has been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. MLB is investigating an alleged domestic violence incident that took place Monday night in Atlantic City, N.J., where Herrera was arrested on charges of simple assault.
According to a police report, a 20-year-old woman “had visible signs of injury to her arms and neck that was sustained after being assaulted by her boyfriend.”
The Press of Atlantic City reported that police located Herrera in his hotel room at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino and arrested him without incident. He was released on a summons.
“This morning we were made aware of an alleged incident involving Odúbel Herrera,” the Phillies said in a statement. “Upon receiving this information, we immediately reported the incident to Major League Baseball, which has informed us that Herrera has been placed on Administrative Leave. The Phillies take any domestic violence accusation seriously, and strongly support the Joint Domestic Violence Policy agreed upon by MLB and the MLBPA.”
MLB's statement read: "The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odúbel Herrera has been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy."
Herrera will be on administrative leave for up to seven days while MLB investigates. Players may challenge any decision before an arbitration panel.
Herrera is in the third year of a five-year, $30.5 million contract, which runs through 2021. He is making $5 million this season, $7 million next season and $10 million in 2021. He has club options for 2022 and '23. His contract cannot be voided.
The Phillies were expected to replace Herrera on the roster with outfielder Nick Williams, who was recently optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
