Bad news for the Angels, as the team announced on Wednesday that outfielder Josh Hamilton is set for thumb surgery and will likely be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks. Hamilton injured his left thumb while sliding head-first into first base on Tuesday night against the Mariners, and a subsequent MRI revealed a torn ligament. The surgery will be performed in the coming days in Los Angeles. 
The Angels have thus placed Hamilton on the 15-day DL, and they've recalled outfielder J.B. Shuck to take his place on the active roster. Shuck will be available to play Wednesday night.Hamilton, 32, was off to a hot start in 2014, as he was batting .444/.545/.741 with two homers and two doubles in eight games. He's in the second year of a five-year, $133-million contract.In Hamilton's absence, the Angels will likely go with a platoon of Shuck and Collin Cowgill in left field.Dayn Perry/CBS Sports
