PHOENIX -- The Mets are heading back to New York in dramatically different shape than when they left.
Dillon Gee's seven shutout innings Wednesday put a cherry on their winning road trip, leading to a 5-2 victory over the D-backs and a 6-3 romp through Atlanta, Anaheim and Phoenix. Leaving home a struggling club, the Mets will return to Citi Field this weekend sitting one game above .500.

Gee, Mets send D-Backs to 6th straight loss, 5-2

Gee ensured that much with his best start of 2014. Perfect through four innings at Chase Field, Gee did not allow his first hit until Martin Prado's double with two outs in the fifth. He gave up only two others on the afternoon, needing merely 72 pitches to complete seven innings. Gee struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Yet despite Gee's breezy afternoon, manager Terry Collins removed his starting pitcher from the game after seven innings. Kyle Farnsworth, Scott Rice and Jose Valverde combined on the final six outs to close out Gee's gem. Aaron Hill's solo homer to lead off the ninth foiled the shutout bid for the Mets, then Paul Goldschmidt went deep off Valverde as well.
Making his second start of the nine-game road trip, Anthony Recker led the offensive charge against D-backs starter Brandon McCarthy by homering in the second and doubling in the sixth. The Mets scored two other times against McCarthy, once on Kirk Nieuwenhuis' sacrifice fly and once on Gee's RBI groundout.
Eric Young continued his hot streak with a hit, a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases, while David Wright extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-5 afternoon.
