SAN DIEGO -- No near no-hitter for Andrew Cashner this time, but the Padres' starting pitcher managed to be dominant just the same on Wednesday night.
Cashner, five days removed from a one-hit shutout of the Tigers, allowed one earned run over 7 1/3 innings as the Padres defeated the Rockies, 4-2, before a crowd of 17,428 at Petco Park.
Cashner (2-1) allowed nine hits, had one walk and five strikeouts. He got 10 ground-ball outs and was efficient, throwing 73 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

The Padres (7-8) scored twice in the fifth inning off Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who saw a run score on a passed ball for San Diego to grab a 2-1 lead.
Chris Denorfia followed with a line-drive double down the right-field line to make it 3-1. De La Rosa (0-3) allowed three hits and a walk in that fateful fifth inning. He allowed two earned runs in six innings with four strikeouts.
Denorfia added an RBI single in the seventh inning for a 4-1 advantage.
The Rockies struck first, as Justin Morneau jumped on a first-pitch changeup with one out in the second inning, sending it well over the fence in center field for a 1-0 lead. The estimated distance of the home run was 411 feet.
Morneau finished with three hits for the Rockies (7-9).
The Padres tied the score in the bottom of the inning, using the long ball as well. Tommy Medica lined a home run over the fence in left for his first home run of the season.
