DETROIT -- There would be no need for extra innings when the Angels' challenging three-city road trip began on Friday.
Their bats made sure of that.
Coming off a six-game homestand that saw them play four extra-inning games, the Angels jumped all over Drew Smyly and the Tigers' bullpen to back an effective Jered Weaver in an 11-6 rout at Comerica Park.

Albert Pujols hits 497th homer as Angels roll past Tigers 11-6

Howie Kendrick homered twice, Albert Pujols hit his 497th career home run, Ian Stewart fell a homer shy of the cycle and four Angels hitters had multiple extra-base hits, one shy of the club record. It was the Angels' 10th consecutive win over the Tigers, the second-longest winning streak against Detroit in franchise history, and it followed a gritty, 12-inning win over the A's that ended on Chris Iannetta's walk-off homer late Wednesday night.
Weaver entered 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA in his first two starts, but gave up just one run in six innings -- walking three, striking out three, scattering three hits and recording 12 of his 18 outs in the air -- to help the Angels move back to .500 at 8-8.
An Angels lineup that was without Josh Hamilton (left thumb surgery), Kole Calhoun (sprained right ankle) and David Freese (scratched because of a tight right quad) forced Smyly to throw 64 pitches through the first two innings, racked up 10 extra-base hits -- for the second time in five days -- and put up double-digit runs by the sixth inning.
J.B. Shuck (fielder's choice) and Stewart (triple) put the Angels on the board in the second, and Kendrick gave his team a 4-0 lead in the third with his first home run of the season.
Weaver ran into trouble for the first and only time in the bottom half of the third inning, giving up a two-out RBI single to Torii Hunter and then walking Miguel Cabrera. But the ace battled back from being down 2-0 to strike out Victor Martinez, and his offense reeled off four runs in the fourth, getting a two-run double from Mike Trout and a two-run homer from Kendrick -- initially called a double, then overturned after an official challenge.
In the sixth, Pujols put the game away with a three-run, line-drive homer over the left-field fence, giving him five home runs on the season and putting him three away from being the 26th member of the 500 club. Pujols' homer was the Angels' Major League-leading 27th, after totaling 24 in all of April last season.
Reliever Josh Wall struggled mightily in his Angels debut, allowing all five batters he faced in the seventh to reach -- on a double, a walk and three straight singles -- and getting charged with five earned runs. But Kevin Jepsen, Michael Kohn, and Ernesto Frieri recorded the final nine outs to finish off the Tigers (7-6).
