ARLINGTON -- Rangers ace right-hander Yu Darvish lost his bid for the sixth no-hitter in franchise history with two outs in the ninth inning of Friday night's 8-0 win over the Red Sox when David Ortiz hit a clean single to right field through a shift.
Darvish became the third pitcher in Major League history to lose a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth; the righty came within one out of a perfect game in his first start last year, against the Astros. In that outing, he gave up a two-out single to Marwin Gonzalez.

Texas' ace lost his bid for a perfect game with two outs in the seventh on Friday when a sky-high popup hit by Ortiz fell between two fielders and was ruled an error.
Despite walking the next batter he faced, Mike Napoli, Darvish escaped the seventh and worked around a leadoff walk to Xander Bogaerts in the eighth to enter the ninth with his bid for a no-hitter intact. Right fielder Alex Rios was charged with the error on Ortiz's popup, which fell between second baseman Rougned Odor and Rios in shallow right.
Darvish, showing outstanding control of his breaking pitches, completed 8 2/3 innings with two walks and 12 strikeouts, including six in a row at one point -- one short of the club record set by Nolan Ryan and tied by Neftali Feliz.
Darvish breezed through the sixth, needing only seven pitches to complete the frame.
Darvish had a scare in the fifth. With one out, Grady Sizemore hit a line drive to left that Shin-Soo Choo briefly misjudged and almost let sail over his head. But Choo was able to snag it at the last moment.
