SAN DIEGO -- Ian Kennedy allowed one run in six innings Tuesday night and Seth Smith and Carlos Quentin each hit home runs as the Padres defeated the Reds, 8-2, before a crowd of 20,312 at Petco Park.
Kennedy (6-9) allowed seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts while Smith connected for his ninth home run of the season in the first inning.
Cincinnati pitcher Mike Leake (6-7) allowed three runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He had four strikeouts and no walks.

Two deep drives help send Kennedy past Reds 8-2

The Padres (37-47) struck first on Smith's home run to right field. In the second inning, Kennedy helped himself with an RBI single to right field, the last of three successive singles off Leake.
The Reds (43-40) got a run back in the fifth inning when Todd Frazier punched an RBI single into center field with two outs in the inning.
The Padres increased their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chase Headley knocked in a run with a single.
Smith finished with three hits for the Padres, who had a season-high 16 hits a night after winning 1-0 with just one hit against the Reds. Every starter in the lineup had at least one hit.
Quentin's home run in the seventh inning, his fourth of the season, made it a 5-1 game. All told, the Padres scored four runs in that seventh inning.
The game ended in odd fashion, with Padres manager Bud Black's successful challenge on a force play at second base. With two outs and the bases loaded, Frazier was initially ruled safe on Headley's throw to second. After a brief review, the umpires overturned the call and the game was over.
