Reds' second baseman Brandon Phillips will miss 8-12 weeks following surgery for a torn thumb ligament, the team announced. He left Wednesday's game with a left thumb injury after making a diving defensive stop.Phillips, 33, has been very durable over the years -- this will be his first trip to the disabled list since breaking a finger in 2008. He has played at least 140 games every year since 2006 and at least 150 games four times in the last five seasons.
Coming into Thursday, Phillips has hit .272/.308/.392 (94 OPS+) with 19 doubles and seven home runs in 86 games this year. He has hit a slighty below-average .271/.314/.408 (95 OPS+) since 2012, but Phillips makes up for it with strong defense at second.The Reds figure to play veteran utility man Ramon Santiago at second base for the time being. The 34-year-old has hit .235/.316/.279 (68 OPS+) in 32 games this year.Righty Homer Bailey exited Thursday's start with the right knee injury.
