Longtime Braves broadcaster Pete Van Wieren died Saturday after a long battle with cancer, the team has announced. He was 69 years old.Van Wieren was known as "The Professor" due to his expertly researched knowledge of the game in his time with TBS. He retired after 33 years in the booth in 2008, shortly after the death of his longtime partner and friend, Skip Caray.Here's a nice, throwback picture of Van Wieren with Ernie Johnson and Caray:

Van Wieren and Caray were inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame together in 2004, joining Johnson who had previously been inducted.The versatile Van Wieren also called NBA, NHL and Big Ten football games in his career, but he was mostly known for his time as a Braves broadcaster. In 2010, he released a book, titled "Of Mikes and Men: A Lifetime of Braves Baseball."Van Wieren is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine, along with sons Jon and Steve -- also a daughter-in-law and three granddaughters.Matt Snyder/CBS Sports
