PITTSBURGH -- The Marlins are piecing together what the organization believes is a formidable young rotation.
But the group will no longer include Jacob Turner.
Miami on Tuesday announced Turner was designated for assignment, two days after the right-hander gave up five runs in four innings in a 7-3 loss to the Reds. Lefty Brian Flynn was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans to fill the roster spot.

The transaction is mildly surprising because of Turner's age, 23, and his upside. The 6-foot-5 right-hander was the ninth overall pick of the Tigers in 2009. He was pushed through the Minor Leagues quickly, and he made his MLB debut at age 20 in 2011.
Turner was dealt to the Marlins in July 2012 as part of the Anibal Sanchez /Omar Infante deal. The trade also included Flynn and catcher Rob Brantly.
Miami has used Turner in the rotation and out of the bullpen, and he was 4-7 with a 5.97 ERA. In 12 starts, he was 4-5 with a 6.03 ERA. In relief he was 0-2 (5.74).
Flynn was scheduled to start for New Orleans on Tuesday. He is expected to be used in long relief. Miami has not officially said who will replace Turner in the rotation. It may wind up being Brad Penny, who threw six scoreless innings at New Orleans on Monday night.
Complicating Turner's status with the Marlins is he is out of options, so he can't be sent to the Minors for more seasoning.
Turner's salary this season is $1 million with a $1 million option for 2015. Based on service time, he could void his contract for next season and filed for arbitration.
The Marlins still could be exploring waiver trade options for Turner, who remains one of the youngest starters in the Majors.
Flynn, 24, has worked to a 7-8 record and a 4.00 ERA in 21 starts for New Orleans, and he worked one relief appearance for the Marlins earlier this year.
Flynn, a seventh-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, has made five career appearances in the Majors and owns a 8.14 ERA. He pitched to a 2.80 ERA in 23 appearances for New Orleans in 2013, but he's given up 140 hits and 13 home runs in 117 innings for New Orleans this season.
