The Rangers are declining outfielder Alex Rios' $14 million option, as expected. The club chose instead to pay the $2 million buyout on the veteran outfielder, who now becomes a free agent.
Word is, the team has informed Rios of its decision, which would not come as a surprise to him following a year in which he struggled with thumb and ankle injuries.

Rangers decline $14 million option on outfielder Alex Rios

Rios has been a solid all-around player throughout his career, but the unproductive second half left Texas little choice.
The injuries limited Rios to four home runs; none in the second half. He hit .280.
Texas fielded inquiries for Rios at the trade deadline, but with the injuries affecting him, teams wanted the Rangers to pay some of his salary. That was a tip-off right there Texas could not pick up the option.
