The Astros released outfielder J.D. Martinez on Saturday, the team announced. The move helps clear a roster spot for young players at Triple-A.Martinez, 26, is a career .251/.300/.387 hitter with 24 home runs in parts of three seasons with Houston. He was never able to build on the .274/.319/.423 batting line he put in 53 games in 2011.
GM Jeff Luhnow explained the move was a victim of their own success. I understand Luhnow was referring to the team's strong farm system and plethora of young outfielders, but I'm not sure the GM of a club that has lost at least 106 games in three straight years should use the world "success" to describe anything they've done lately, especially when fans are being alienated.I don't know, it seems to me most teams would look to replace a corner outfielder with a career 88 OPS+ and a poor glove.
