The Astros released outfielder J.D. Martinez on Saturday, the team announced. The move helps clear a roster spot for young players at Triple-A.
Martinez, 26, is a career .251/.300/.387 hitter with 24 home runs in parts of three seasons with Houston. He was never able to build on the .274/.319/.423 batting line he put in 53 games in 2011.

GM Jeff Luhnow explained the move was a victim of their own success. I understand Luhnow was referring to the team's strong farm system and plethora of young outfielders, but I'm not sure the GM of a club that has lost at least 106 games in three straight years should use the world "success" to describe anything they've done lately, especially when fans are being alienated.
I don't know, it seems to me most teams would look to replace a corner outfielder with a career 88 OPS+ and a poor glove. Not sure any others would use that as an example of "success."
